Kilkenny is Ireland's loveliest inland city. It is steeped in history and rose to prominence in the 13th century when the Irish Parliament would often meet in the famous Kilkenny Castle. The Anglo-Norman Butler family came to power in the 1390's and held sway over the city for 500 years. Although their place of power is long gone, their legacy is visible in the city's restored historic buildings. Kilkenny is proud of its heritage and every August hosts an arts festival. Kilkenny is of great architectural interest with many building constructed from a distinctive local black lime stone - known as Kilkenny Marble. A tour of the town will reveal many unexpected treasures.

Kilkenny Castle
This Norman fortress is of course the jewel in the City's crown and has been dominating Kilkenny City and South East of Ireland for more than 800 years. It is one of Ireland's most famous castles. Former home of the Butler family, the castle contains many magnificent features and is well worth a visit.
